I am small but have a BIG heart,
I cry myself to sleep on city streets,
I hold out my hands hoping to be loved, but all I get is change in return. But I guess that will do for now, It will buy me a cup of milk so my belly stops growling in pain.

I am your neighbor although you don’t know I suffer in the hands of someone who says they love me. But I dare not tell the things that go on behind closed doors I suffer alone. Shall I dare ask for help?

Is this what they deserve? Children are precious do what you can to help a child, you might be the key to end the abuse and violence in their LIFE, and their childrens life and their childrens childrens LIFE! Abuse doesn’t just stop there, it keep on going and going if someone doesn’t step up and make a change! Be the one who does make a change! That child depends on your voice to speak up!

Heron flying low across the lake

I have dusted off this shot of a grey heron in flight from the days when I took pictures of them almost exclusively.

I developed two rules of thumb for shots like this:

1. No "bum" shots. The bird must be flying towards or past the camera, rather than away. This provides a much better image and rules out all those disturb-the-bird-and-snap-it-flying-off shots; and

2. Avoid blue sky backgrounds. Good light is a pre-requisite for capturing birds in flight, but this leads to endless anatomical shots with uniform blue backdrops. The challenge is to get a b/g which is interesting, conveys information, but doesn’t distract from the bird itself.

This was one of my best efforts …

The cygnet siblings in St Stephen’s Green, Dublin, are a well-fed bunch with their many admirers constantly feeding them lumps of bread. I haven’t seen them attempting to fly, but perhaps they do that when the humans leave at dusk.

These two women were photographed on Broadway at 90th Street. The man behind them was pushing a stroller, which you basically can’t see; he had nothing to do with the women, as far as I could tell…

This is part of an evolving photo-project, which will probably continue throughout the summer of 2008, and perhaps beyond: a random collection of "interesting" people in a broad stretch of the Upper West Side of Manhattan — between 72nd Street and 104th Street, especially along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue.

I don’t like to intrude on people’s privacy, so I normally use a telephoto lens in order to photograph them while they’re still 50-100 feet away from me; but that means I have to continue focusing my attention on the people and activities half a block away, rather than on what’s right in front of me.

I’ve also learned that, in many cases, the opportunities for an interesting picture are very fleeting — literally a matter of a couple of seconds, before the person(s) in question move on, turn away, or stop doing whatever was interesting. So I’ve learned to keep the camera switched on (which contradicts my traditional urge to conserve battery power), and not worry so much about zooming in for a perfectly-framed picture … after all, once the digital image is uploaded to my computer, it’s pretty trivial to crop out the parts unrelated to the main subject.

For the most part, I’ve deliberately avoided photographing bums, drunks, drunks, and crazy people. There are a few of them around, and they would certainly create some dramatic pictures; but they generally don’t want to be photographed, and I don’t want to feel like I’m taking advantage of them. I’m still looking for opportunities to take some "sympathetic" pictures of such people, which might inspire others to reach out and help them. We’ll see how it goes …

The only other thing I’ve noticed, thus far, is that while there are lots of interesting people to photograph, there are far, far, *far* more people who are *not* so interesting. They’re probably fine people, and they might even be more interesting than the ones I’ve photographed … but there was just nothing memorable about them.
